Influencing Social Distancing Uptake During COVID-19

SURGO VENTURES

OBJECTIVE

Identify factors impacting social distancing adoption during COVID-19.

CHALLENGE

Rapid turnaround of large-scale research study to meet project urgency.

SOLUTION

At the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, partnered with the Surgo Foundation to conduct a rigorous national study using Ipsos’s Knowledge Panel to survey 2,500 Americans to understand and measure social distancing awareness, beliefs, barriers and behaviors. Led survey development – applying CUBES behavioral science model to map out the ecology of social distancing. Using machine learning and cluster analysis, revealed four distinct population segments with different social distancing beliefs and behaviors that differed by perceptions of risk, social norms, burden, and information sought.

Addressing Unmet Health Need for People Living with HIV

MARYLAND STATE DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH, OFFICE OF ORAL HEALTH

OBJECTIVE

Understand the key elements for a successful physician-dentist referral program, including the motivations and barriers for physicians to provide dentist referrals and for people living with HIV (PLWH) to act on the referrals.

CHALLENGE

Finding solutions to encourage doctors to provide referrals and encourage people living with HIV to use the referrals to obtain dental services.

SOLUTION

Conducted qualitative research with Maryland physicians and dentists as well as with PLWH in Maryland. Reviewed the literature to inform the research, developed qualitative discussion guides, and obtained IRB approval. Conducted focus groups and in-depth interviews. Analyzed the findings and provided data-driven recommendations for program design and outreach. This research will inform an upcoming communications campaign by the Office of Oral Health.

Program Evaluation for Rides for Moms

SURGO VENTURES

OBJECTIVE

Evaluate and improve the effectiveness of the Rides for Moms program, a partnership between Uber and local health clinics that provides transportation to prenatal care appointments for low-income, expectant mothers free-of-cost.

CHALLENGE

Hard-to-reach and underserved population. Barriers among U.S. population segments.

SOLUTION

Designed and operationalized a custom evaluation plan to measure program effectiveness and identify behaviors and attitudes related to program use and appointment attendance. Developed survey instruments to capture key metrics at various timepoints during the program. Designed, fielded, and analyzed qualitative research and provided consulting services throughout the evaluation.

Economic Valuation of Artificial and Coral Reefs in Southeast Florida

NATIONAL OCEANIC AND ATMOSPHERIC ADMINISTRATION (NOAA)/IPSOS

OBJECTIVE

As a subcontractor for Ipsos Public Affairs, we are developing a survey for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) on the nonmarket value of coral reefs in Southeast Florida and the Florida Keys. The goal is to understand (a) how the public values use of the reefs and access to the reefs, (b) how the public values restoration and conservation of coral reefs, and (c) how the public values artificial versus natural reefs. Findings will inform education and conservation decision making.

CHALLENGE

Create an online survey that applies both to Florida residents and nonresidents (tourists), that incorporates a discrete choice design and takes less than 20 minutes to complete.

SOLUTION

We are working with local stakeholders to design and pilot test the survey.

Evaluating COVID-19 Behavioral Health Grants

DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA DEPARTMENT OF BEHAVIORAL HEALTH

OBJECTIVE

Evaluate outcomes of Emergency COVID-19 Resiliency and Recovery grants awarded to over eight District of Columbia behavioral health providers by the DC Department of Behavioral Health, funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).

CHALLENGE

Measuring the impact of a variety of behavioral health providers offering services that range from case management for those experiencing housing instability to trauma support for healthcare professionals.

SOLUTION

OBJECTIVE

Evaluate the impact of the Office of the Attorney General’s Cure the Streets Violence Interruption program, launched in specific neighborhoods to interrupt and de-escalate community violence.

CHALLENGE

Assess a hard-to-reach and underserved population.

SOLUTION

Designed and fielded a research study using mobile tablets in local, public spaces to collect in-person responses from over 400 residents. Presented key findings, analysis, and recommendations to the Attorney General and the DC Judiciary Committee Oversight Committee on the impact of the OAG’s program. This study was the first of a three-wave annual study.

Informing Policy for Teacher Retention

DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA STATE BOARD OF EDUCATION

OBJECTIVE

Inform city-level policy to address high turnover of teachers in DC Public Schools (DCPS).

CHALLENGE

Rapid turnaround so that the DC State Board of Education could have a research tool in place for the current school year.

SOLUTION

Designed a custom survey for use with recently exited DCPS teachers based on extensive input from the Board and key stakeholders as well as a study of similar efforts in other states. Survey tool was delivered to the Board within 5 business days of the stakeholder meetings.
